This year was the third year of the annual IDF (International Diabetes Federation) youth leadership conference to be held in Tirennia in North Western Italy. And amongst the other applicants from across Europe, I'm excited to be planning to attend.
I applied for the conference back in April last year and heard about it through the YLAG group that I belong to, who are part of Diabetes UK. As I believe you have to belong to your countries diabetes member association to attend. I then found out in the May that my application had been successful and would be going, so started preparing for the camp. The camps themes so far have always been sport, which is a largely contributing factor as to why I was so keen to attend.
The IDF are a global organisation that work with many different people who affect diabetes living including, politicians, health care professionals, patients and organisations. The group holding the camp are the European branch, who are based out of the Brussels offices in Belgium. And the group have invited 24 young people between the ages of 18 to 30 from all around Europe both outside the European Union and in.
The camp is to be held from July 22nd for the duration of a week at an Italian sports village and is a residential camp. I can't wait to attend the camp and hope to get out of it- the sharing of experiences, new friendships and to learn about how diabetes is managed in some of the rest of the world. So watch this space and I look forward to reporting on the event soon!
