Get Moving For a Cure for Type 1 Diabetes and JDRF news update!

A couple of weeks ago I was asked to go and do an after dinner speech at the JDRF Masquerade Ball 2014, as I wrote about in my blog of the same name - JDRF Masquerade Ball. Well I've got an exciting announcement to make about the fundraising evening and also about a great upcoming event from JDRF Wales and the West group!

For those who might have missed the first blog on the event I'll give you a brief re-cap. JDRF represent the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation whose primary aim is to find a cure for type 1 diabetes. Their fundraising event was held at the Grand Marriott Hotel in Bristol and was a masquerade ball full of beautiful gowns and stunning masks, held in aid of raising funds towards a cure for Type 1 diabetes. The event was attended by parents of children with diabetes, volunteers, supporters and people with diabetes themselves. It was a great event and I was asked to give a speech/ presentation before dancing started!

Between my speech, the dinner and dancing there were fabulously organised live and silent auctions and a raffle too. All of the proceeds of which cumulated in an amazing £6,500 being raised on the night! A great amount that JDRF will put towards support for children with Type 1 diabetes and their families and towards research for a cure for type 1 diabetes. It truly was an amazingly well organised night thanks to JDRF and Annabel (Mum to a daughter with diabetes).

But they're not stopping there! JDRF are involved in another great event in aid of diabetes, coming up at the start of June! It's a Penarth Zumbathon in aid of JDRF to be held on Saturday 7th June 2014 at Penarth Leisure Centre near Cardiff. For those who've never tried it before JDRF describe Zumba as;

"Zumba is an exhilarating, effective, Latin-inspired, calorie-burning, dance-based fitness class that's easy to follow and fun. It's full of salsa moves and addictive Latin grooves, so whether you've tried it or not come along and party yourself into shape while raising money for a great cause."

I tried Zumba before myself during my off season from athletics one September, it was really good fun and a good little work out too. One thing I noticed from when I went before was that it's a great event for people of all abilities and fitness levels. It felt that you could put as much or as little effort that you felt that you were able to into it. So it really will be a great event to get involved in. Proceeds from the event, as there is a £5 registration fee go towards finding a cure for Type 1 diabetes. What better way to show your support and put diabetes in it's place, than going along to support the cause and for those with the condition- to show that diabetes won't be stopping you from having fun!

For those interested in participating in the Zumbathon for JDRF event, you can register on the JDRF website, so get moving and sign up!
