Olympic Day 2015 - Get Involved!

As anyone who has read my blog will know, I'm a big advocate of sport and physical activity, the pinnacle of which in my opinion and in the opinion of many others has to be the Olympic Games. Growing up I loved watching my sporting heroes compete for medals and personal bests in the Games on TV. It didn't matter which nation they were from, I was just excited to see who could run and jump the fastest.

I got my first taste of being at an actual Olympic event, when I went along to watch the Athens Olympics in 2004 with my Dad... and that was it, I was hooked. The television coverage of the games does a great job of conveying the camaraderie between athletes, games makers and officials. But what TV can't show, is the spirit of the Olympic Games that exists amongst the spectators attending the event. Where celebrating sporting success is the global language and people from all different backgrounds from all over the world come together to witness history being made and this is what Olympic Day is all about!

Olympic Day is an opportunity for people from all over the world to get up and get active on this special day and beyond. Whether it's a little extra movement to enliven your daily routine or great sporting feat, it all counts. Some communities will organise sporting, cultural and educational activities to get young and old alike engaged in activity with the aim of conveying the many benefits that sport can provide.

If you're like myself and already enjoy being active, throughout the month of June Twitter users have been using the #OLYMPICDAY to tag their tweets and photos of them participating in sport. Alternatively, if you're looking for sporting inspiration for what you want to get involved in, you can search the hashtag #OLYMPICDAY to see what others have doing today. If you'd like to find something to join in within in your community, there are hundreds events being organised across the world. But whatever you decide, here's wishing you've had a great Olympic Day!
